Hedge funds endure whipsawing April

South African hedge funds endured a whipsawing April to end the month a median 1.45% higher as the FTSE/JSE All Share Index gained 4.34% and South Africa’s All Bond Index added 0.76%.

Long/short equity funds were the strongest category, adding a median 1.84% as Trump tariff news prompted a market decline early in the month, followed by sporadic recovery.

Worldwide flexible funds had a good month, with positive returns across the board although performance remains mixed year to date.

Single-manager multi-strategy funds gained a median 1.46% for the month while market neutral and quantitative funds rose 1.24% and fixed income funds added 0.61%. South African fund of hedge funds added 1.25% in April.
