
South African hedge funds started the year with a median gain of 1.49% led by the multi-strategy category.
Markets were strong in January with the FTSE/JSE All Share Index adding 3.72% while South Africa’s All Bond Index gained 1.93%.
Further afield the MSCI World Index added 2.19% and the MSCI Emerging Markets Index gained 8.81%.
South African long/short equity was the next strongest hedge fund category, adding a median 1.34%.
Fixed income funds were a median 1.2% ahead, while market-neutral funds delivered a steady 1.03%.
