South African hedge funds had a tough March, adding a median 0.21% to end the first quarter 0.51% higher, with fixed income strategies in the lead.

By comparison, the FTSE/JSE All Share Index added 3.55% for the month to end the first quarter 5.94% higher, while South Africa’s All Bond Index added 0.19% (up 0.7% for the first three months).
The MSCI World Index fell -4.64% for the month (-2.14% for the quarter) while the MSCI Emerging Markets Index added 0.38% (+2.41% for Q1) and the MSCI Frontier Markets Africa Index rose 6.42% (+9% to end-March)
The HedgeNews Africa Fixed Income median returned 0.78% in March to close the quarter 2.09% higher.
Market neutral and quantitative funds added 0.29% for the month, to sit 0.1% higher for the year, while long/short equity funds were flat, to come in a median -0.67% lower for the first quarter.
The multi-strategy category retraced by -0.13% for the month to close the quarter -0.2% lower.
South African fund of hedge funds recorded a net 0.29% gain in March, to end the first quarter with a 0.51% return.
