South African hedge funds had a healthy September, adding 2.5% in a strong month for the markets, to sit 13.5% higher for the first three quarters of the year.
By comparison, the FTSE/JSE All Share Index rose 4.04% for the month and South Africa’s All Bond Index added 3.89%. Further afield, the MSCI World Index gained 1.69% in September, and the MSCI Emerging Markets Index rose 6.45%.
South African long/short equity funds were the strongest category, delivering a median of 3.46%, their best month since a 4.56% gain in November 2023. It was also the second 3%-plus return this year, after a 3.02% gain in June.
South African single-manager multi-strategy funds added a median 2.56% for the month while market neutral and quantitative funds gained 1.91% and fixed income funds were 1.65% higher.
