South African long/short equity funds were the strongest category in August, adding a median 1.96% to sit 13.88% higher for the year so far.
The broader HedgeNews Africa South Africa Single Manager Composite gained 1.46% for the month, while the FTSE/JSE All Share Index rose 1.38% and South Africa’s All Bond Index added 2.35%.
Global markets were also positive, with the MSCI World Index gaining 2.51% while the MSCI Emerging Markets Index rose 1.4% and the MSCI Frontier Markets Africa Index added 2.25%.
Market neutral and quantitative funds were the next strongest category, gaining a median 1.44% in August, while the fixed income category added 1.29% and multi-strategy funds were ahead by 1.18%.
South African fund of hedge funds added 1.44% for the month.
