South African hedge funds added a median 0.95% in August, with the HedgeNews Africa SA Single-Manager Composite sitting 9.26% higher so far this year.
By comparison, the FTSE / JSE All Share Index (TRI) lost 1.74% on a total return basis, and the South African All Bond Index added 1.7%. Global equities moved higher, with the MSCI World Index gaining 2.35% and MSCI Emerging Markets Index.
Multi-strategy funds set the pace, gaining a median 1.21%, followed by long/short funds, which rose a median 1.18% as the South African equity market declined.
Market neutral & quantitative funds gained 0.99% in August and fixed income hedge funds added a median 0.47%.
