All South African hedge fund strategies ended January in positive territory, with the HedgeNews Africa South African Single-Manager Composite adding a median 0.67%, albeit with a wide range of returns at individual fund level.
Fixed income was the best performing strategy in January, with the HedgeNews Africa Fixed Income Index adding a median 1.23%. This follows a gain of 10.39% last year.
The HedgeNews Africa Long/Short Equity Index gained a median 0.56% for the month, after adding 5.85% in 2017.
Market-neutral funds eked out a positive median in January, with the HedgeNews Africa Market Neutral and Quantitative Index adding 0.1%, after the category added 3.58% last year.
