South African long/short equity funds started the year on a strong note after a difficult 2016, coming in as the top-performing category in the HedgeNews Africa database for January with a median gain of 2.13%, their best month since March 2016.
All strategy areas were positive on a median basis, with the HedgeNews Africa South African Composite gaining 1.46% while the broader HedgeNews Africa Composite, which includes pan-African strategies, gained 1.28%.
By comparison, the FTSE/JSE All Share (ALSI) added 4.31% on a total return basis, the All Bond Index gained 1.33%, the MSCI World Index rose 2.4% and the MSCI Emerging Markets Index gained 5.5%. Copyright. HedgeNews Africa – February 2017.
