Fixed income hedge funds lead in October

South African hedge funds dipped a median -0.09% in October, holding steady as the FTSE/JSE All Share Index declined by -0.92% and South Africa’s All Bond Index fell -2.2%.

Global markets also retraced, with the MSCI World Index dropping -2.04% while the MSCI Emerging Markets Index fell -4.38%.

Fixed income funds were the strongest South African category, adding a median 0.65% for the month, while market neutral and quantitative funds were stable, gaining a median 0.18% to make them the second best performing South African category.

Single-manager multi-strategy hedge funds dipped a median -0.09% in October, with a wide range of returns for the month.

Long/short equity funds declined by a median -0.47% yet remain the best performing category for the year so far, with a gain of 17.33%.
