Multi-strategy posts December gains

South Africa multi-strategy hedge funds were the strongest category in December, adding a median 2.63% for the month, followed by South African long/short equity funds, which gained 2.35%.

The broader HedgeNews Africa South Africa Single Manager Composite added 1.64% for the month to amount to 15.07% for the full year, with South African long/short leading the categories in 2025 with a median gain of 18.15%.

By comparison the FTSE/JSE All Share Index gained 4.57% in December (42.4% during the year,) while South Africa’s All Bond Index added 2.75% (full year 24.23%).

Market-neutral funds returned a median 1.21% in December and 9.17% for the year, while fixed income hedge funds added a median 0.88% in December to close the year 13.87% higher.

South African fund of hedge funds added 2.19% in December to close 2025 with a median gain of 14.91%, their strongest year since records began in 2007.
