South African hedge funds were flat in January in a bumpy month for markets, which saw the FTSE/JSE All Share Index add 2.32% and South Africa’s All Bond Index gain 0.44%.
By comparison the MSCI World Index gained 3.47% and the MSCI Frontier Markets Africa Index added 7.92%.
Fixed income hedge fund funds were the best performers, adding a median 0.61% for the month as returns diverged across the category.

Market neutral and quantitative funds were the next strongest category, adding a median 0.09%.
Multi-strategy funds edged -0.09% lower, while long/short equity funds retraced by -0.72%.
Fund of funds edged higher in January, with the HedgeNews Africa Fund of Funds Composite adding a median 0.11%.
