Investment strategy

Our investment philosophy integrates both bottom-up and top-down analysis, forming the foundation of our strategy. This approach allows us to effectively engage in pair trading between different counters, thereby isolating market risk and focusing on alpha generation through company-specific opportunities. We adhere to an internal net exposure guideline, ensuring that each position we take is balanced by a counter position to consistently limit market risk. By identifying the intrinsic value of companies and comparing associated catalysts, we are able to capitalise on idiosyncratic opportunities and drive performance. We utilise quantitative methods to optimise downside deviation by appropriately sizing positions relative to their beta exposures. This ensures that we effectively manage risk while maintaining a high-conviction portfolio.

Investment team

Anas Madhi has been a fund manager since 2007, overseeing the local long-only strategy, and since 2019, managing the hedge fund. A former medical doctor turned corporate financier and fund manager, Anas holds an MBBCH and an MBA (cum laude). He is joined by Zwelakhe Mngomezulu, who has been a co-fund manager on the hedge fund since 2021. Zwelakhe, with a Masters in Financial Economics, brings strong quantitative expertise to the management of the fund.
